Company News | Professor Hui Su Attends "Tiangong Class: Hong Kong & Macao Special Session", Sharing the Inspiration and Space Mission Behind "MUSICO"


On September 9, the "Tiangong Class: Hong Kong & Macao Special Session" space lecture—co-hosted by the HKSAR Government, Macao SAR Government, and the China Manned Space Agency—was held at the Tsuen Wan alma mater of astronaut Dr. Lai Ka-ying.

Professor Hui Su, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Director of the Institute for Space Science and Technology at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), "Global STEM Scholar", and Founder & Chairwoman of Stellerus Tech, attended the event. She introduced the "MUSICO" (Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory) payload—led and developed by HKUST—to the attending teachers and students, sharing the original intent, scientific principles, and application value behind the instrument.

Professor Su stated that sending "MUSICO" into space aims to observe cities and the entire planet from a broader perspective, accurately identifying global greenhouse gas emission sources. Because different gases possess unique spectral signatures, "MUSICO" can identify various greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, by analyzing light spectra.

With a spatial resolution of approximately 100 meters, "MUSICO" can further pinpoint key emission sources like power plants and locate the exact sites of greenhouse gas emissions, providing data support for governments to formulate more scientific and targeted emission reduction policies.

Currently, "MUSICO" has been operating in space for over two months. The scientific research team is actively analyzing the acquired imagery and observational data, with relevant findings expected to be announced shortly.

Through space-to-ground communication, expert explanations, and interactive exchanges, the event allowed youth in Hong Kong and Macao to experience the achievements of the nation's manned space program up close. It offered deep insights into space technology and its wide applications, further inspiring the younger generation's passion to explore the universe and engage in technological innovation, while encouraging more young people to pursue their space and tech dreams.
